Arrival
35 Minutes from Gate
to Mountain
Salt Lake City International Airport sits at the mouth of the Wasatch Mountains, one of the most convenient resort arrivals of any world-class mountain destination.
Most Park City properties are 35 to 45 minutes by private car, less in light traffic and occasionally longer in the wake of a significant storm. The route is direct and scenic: I-80 East to UT-224 South. On a clear winter morning, the peaks are visible from baggage claim.
All major rental agencies sit within the consolidated rental facility at SLC, with no shuttle to an off-site lot. Private transfer pickups are curbside at arrivals. Build in a comfortable buffer after major snowfall and peak holiday travel.
Before you arrive
Park City sits at 7,000 feet. If you are coming from sea level, give yourself a day to settle in before full exertion on the mountain, and hydrate generously on your first evening.

Planning Your Visit
The Right Way to Move Depends on When You Are Here
Transportation in Park City shifts significantly between winter and summer. What follows is an honest account of each season, so you can arrive with the right plan already in place.
Winter
November through April
First choice, a private transfer. Arrive without navigating an unfamiliar mountain highway in the dark or after a storm. Your driver handles everything, and you begin your trip the right way.
Second choice, an AWD or 4WD rental. Full independence throughout your stay, and essential on steep neighborhood roads. A standard sedan is not adequate after snowfall on most Park City streets.
Resort shuttles. Free and app-based, but coverage is limited to Canyons Village and Deer Valley East Village. Most vacation rentals do not fall within a service zone.
Rideshare. Uber and Lyft operate in Park City, though fares climb sharply during storms and peak weekends, and reliability dips in heavier snow.
City buses. Free and running year-round, but routes are built for commuters rather than resort guests. Reaching the mountain often means a transfer or a meaningful walk.
Summer
May through October
First choice, a rental car. Roads are clear, trailhead parking is accessible in the morning, and a car gives you genuine freedom to reach the canyons, surrounding towns, and every trail system in the Wasatch.
Airport arrival, private transfer or rideshare. A seamless way to arrive if you plan to collect a rental locally or the following morning.
Resort shuttles. Not available in summer. Canyons Village Connect and Mountain Mover are winter-only services and do not run between May and October.
City buses. Free and running year-round on main corridors, though summer frequency is reduced compared to the peak winter schedule.

Rental Car Guidance
The Freedom of
Your Own Wheels
A rental car offers the fullest independence, particularly in summer, when you will want access to trailheads, surrounding canyons, and towns well beyond Park City's center. All major agencies are available within the consolidated rental facility at SLC Airport.
Essential for winter visitors
Park City neighborhoods are built on steep terrain. Roads ice overnight and are not always cleared before you need them. Reserve a vehicle with all-wheel or four-wheel drive for any winter visit. A standard two-wheel-drive sedan is not sufficient on most driveways and many neighborhood roads after significant snowfall.
Winter
- Specify AWD or 4WD explicitly at the time of booking. Not every vehicle in a fleet qualifies.
- Snow tires are standard on most Utah rental vehicles in winter, but worth confirming at pickup.
- Chains may be required on certain canyon approaches. Inquire at the rental counter.
- Allow meaningful buffer time after major storms. Both I-80 and UT-224 can slow considerably.
Summer
- Any standard vehicle is entirely appropriate. AWD is not required in summer conditions.
- Popular trailhead parking fills early. Plan to arrive before 8am for the most sought-after routes.
- Parking in Old Town is metered and can be limited on peak summer weekends.

Is your stay covered?
If your property is in Old Town, Empire Pass, Prospector, Deer Crest, or most other Park City neighborhoods, these services do not cover your area. A rental car, private transfer, or rideshare will be your most reliable way to and from the mountain.

Public Transportation
Free Buses,
Year Round
Park City and Summit County are served by a unified, completely fare-free transit network connecting Old Town, Kimball Junction, and surrounding communities. No fare, no app, and no account required: simply board and ride.
Routes are built around main corridors and commuter patterns. If your rental is not positioned along a primary line, reaching the slopes or Old Town by bus may involve a transfer or a meaningful walk. The system is most convenient for guests staying near a bus corridor or making occasional trips into town.
- Completely free to ride, with no registration or payment required.
- Year-round service across primary corridors between Old Town, Kimball Junction, and the resort areas.
- Winter service runs with greater frequency on resort-adjacent lines.
- Route maps and real-time schedules available through the High Valley Transit app.
